$110.00

  • Details
This 19th c. Hand forged Wrought Iron Whale Oil Betty Lamp is available to you! It is a classic piece of early American lighting. The upper pan was filled with whatever household fats were readily available such as fish oil or whale oil. A cloth or twisted fiber wick was placed in the spout of the upper reservoir and lit to provide a small, steady flame. Early Betty lamps commonly leaked or dripped fuel from the wick spout so the double-cup variation solved that problem. The attached long iron rod features a curved hook and a pointed end. This allowed the owner to hang the lamp or stab the sharp point directly into exposed wood. This lamp made from hand-forged wrought iron construction typically date to the late 18th century to the early 19th century. They were essential household items before mass-produced lighting. The lamp is in good antique condition with wear from age and use (some rust). It measures 6.25" tall (11" tall with the hook extended), 2" wide, and it is 4" inches deep.
