Some history of the company: Founded by Benjamin Brooke, the company gained massive commercial success in the late 1800s. While they registered Brooke's Crystal Soap in 1890, the company’s most famous worldwide product was Monkey Brand soap. It was a heavily abrasive scouring block used for cleaning hard household surfaces like pots, pans, marble, and metalwork. Because their soap bars contained heavy abrasives (like pumice or quartz dust) meant for scrubbing grime off hard surfaces, using them on fabrics would tear, thin, or ruin the material. The warning "Won't Wash Clothes" was stenciled on their shipping boxes and printed on their labels as an explicit instruction to housewives to keep it away from the laundry pile. In 1899, William Lever (the founder of the massive British soap conglomerate Lever Brothers) purchased Benjamin Brooke & Co.
