19th c. Brass Sherwood Binnacle Ship Lantern – Barton Mechanism Oil Lamp

$265.00

  • Details
This Spectacular 19th c. Brass and Glass Sherwood Binnacle Ship Lantern is available to you and would be a great gift for Father's Day!! It was designed specifically with a brass construction to avoid disrupting the accuracy of the magnetic compass. Unlike typical oil lamps of the era that required a fragile glass chimney to draw oxygen, the white porcelain Barton mechanism was specifically engineered to produce a steady, clean flame without a glass chimney- The design of this lantern allowed sailors to safely extinguish the light by screwing down the brass top to quickly snuff out the flame. It is a wonderful size at 10.75" tall x 4.5" in diameter at it's widest point; the lamp lifts out easily making it simple to fill with oil. It has age old wear with a wonderful patina that is reflective of age and use! It would be a wonderful gift to the mariner in your life! Please message us if you have any questions- Thanks for looking!
